if you browse the support for suse 8.0 you'll find out that it is recommended to use the update utility only if you update from 7.3 to 8.0. for previous versions there is no guarranty for succes (perhaps because of the splitting of rc.config and sys.config). i had problems to update the kde packages even from 7.3 to 8.0 (no ability to start the kde window manager after the update) and the support guys after several attempts told me to do a clean install.
Thanks, ovidiu. First, the simplest question: where in the support database can I find more information about these problems? More generally: a clean install is probably not an option for me or for anyone else with a highly customized system. I'm wondering what methods people have discovered for getting past these incompatibilities, even if a significant amount of tweaking is needed, and coming out with a reasonably neat 8.0 system. Paul
