Hi, I try to enable ACPI in my Compaq Presario 716EA laptop and so far I have managed the following: (under SuSE.8.0.Professional with 2.4.18.SuSE kernel) ACPI support is compiled as a module in the 2.4.18.SuSE kernel. In my laptop it is possible to enable ACPI provided that you boot with "apm=off acpi=on" and then do "modprobe -a ospm_ec ospm_system ospm_processor ospm_button ospm_ac_adapter ospm_battery" *in that order*! After that the following is created under /proc: acpi acpi/battery acpi/ac_adapter acpi/ac_adapter/0 acpi/button acpi/button/lid acpi/button/sleep acpi/button/power acpi/button/power acpi/processor acpi/processor/0 opsm_ac_adapter indicates whether the power is plugged or not but antyhing else does not seem to do anything useful. It is important to note that ospm_thermal cannot be loaded, at least in my latop. It fails indicating "init_module: No such device". AFAIK ospm_thermal is responsible for controlling the fan which in my case is always on and soon enough the keyboard is so hot ... I have tried applying the latest ACPI patches from sourceforge.net but without success. I've even tried (without luck) to apply older patches as well against the 2.4.18.SuSE kernel. In the 2.4.18 kernel SuSE provides on the CDs (I suppose the vanilla kernel) the patches are applied succesfully but the recompilation fails at "make modules". ACPI support in Linux is still a bit flaky, but improving all the time. I've tried to patch the SuSE kernel without success, tho' I have come across one SuSE user who has apparently managed it.
Can you provide with some more info? I'll be gratefull to learn from his/her experience.
I have a Satellite 5005-S504 and can't get sound because no IRQ is assigned to the card.
