I bought a Lexmark E322 laser printer with that precise hope, and it worked out fine. I no longer have the hit or miss printing that I did with my HP PCL printer. It made a huge difference in quality for me. Of course, it doesn't solve the problem of multiple major printing systems in linux, inconsistent printing interfaces, etc. but that's a software problem.
