WINS has nothing to do with whether or not Linux can ping something. Can you ping your default gateway (router)?
The WINS server is supposed to _be_ the default gateway; to my knowledge we have no other nameserver/router on our network (it's pure Windows apart from this one machine). Is it possible to succesfully use a WINS server as the default gateway for a Linux box? Yast2 certainly told me the WINS machine was 'not valid' as a server when I tried to set it up in the GUI, so I suspect it's not actually configured in at all. However we also have the interesting feature that our internal IP address range isn't actually RFC1918 compliant, which is just as likely to be causing problems.. I can ping myself, however. Vicky
