Hi Everyone, I got a proliant 5000R server a short time ago, within the past week I decided to have a go installing 7.3 on it. The install progressed normally until partitioning and yast told me I didn't have a hard drive. I searched the compaq reference site and found a reference to this /w SuSE 6.4 along with a statement that compaq didn't support 6.4. I also found an article on the same site stating that in order to install linux on a proliant server you needed to use the smartstart cd and configure the server for linux. This information was a bit dated as it referenced 6.4 and nothing newer than 7.2 pro. My question is does anyone have any experience installing SuSE on one of these machines? If so, is the reference to having to use smartstart cd still current for 7.3? BTW, I have really not gotten a definitive yes or no from compaq server support so I thought I would ask here.
I have installed SuSE 7.3 on Proliant 2500, 800 and Prosignia 300 servers as well as 8.0 on the Prosignia.A friend has also installed SuSE 7.3 on a elderly professional workstation, which has the motherboard from a Proliant 850. SuSE correctly identified both the onboard SCSI and PCI RAID Controller card. The only problem I had was with the 2500s SuSE only detected 16MB of RAM so I booted with the mem=XXXM option and all was well. It did actually install at 16MB, but it took ages as it was constantly paging to swap. David Bottrill
