Thanks for the info. I've compiled the kernel before,
but with ReiserFS, I just wanted to make sure I got
that part right. I was only recompiling the kernel I
have (for my Athlon processor).
I did run into a strange problem though. When I
rebooted I got a kernel panic because it was unable to
mount the FS. When I rebooted, I noticed some errors
that said something to the effect of "unable to load
modules xxxxxxxx" (one of which was for the Reiser
FS). The explanation was "module not found". I
double-checked and the modules were compiled in there
corretly. Finally, I just set it up to include the
modules in question fully instead of as modules. It
works now, but I still get those errors. It is very
strange.
The modules that were erroring are:
ATARAID
REISERFS
IDE-SCSI
USBCORE
USB-UHCI
Does anybody know why it is still looking for modules?

I need to recompile my kernel and I want to start with the existing options.
Before starting to compile you own kernel i would try 1 read the complete documentation 2 try to find out if your actual kernel won't suffer your claims
Where can I find the current kernel config (SuSE 8.0 Personal BTW)?
The current config/actual kernel configuration file can be found in the /boot-directory with 'vmlinuz-config' ... after you choosed to install the kernel packages (be sure to choose the right kernel-type for your maschine) simply copy the actual config in your linux directory: cp /boot/vmlinuz.config /usr/src/linux ... change in the linux directory and run make menuconfig: 'cd /usr/src/linux' and run 'make menuconfig' ... scroll down at startup-screen to 'Load Alternativ Config' and type in vmlinuz.config ... thn read the documentation how to compile your kernel/modules
