At last I got a clue to my PCMCIA problem in a mailing from Nick Selby to this list, which came on the same day I received a negative reply from SuSE Support to the effect that this problem was 'beyond the scope of the basic 90 day support' which rather surprised me - after all with Win Modems not being supported the obvious alternative with a laptop is a Card Modem. The fix that solved the problem was 1) Change PCMCIA_SYSTEM = "kernel" to PCMCIA_SYSTEM = "external" 2) Change PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS = " " to PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS = " pci_csc=1 pci_int=1 poll_interval=100" 3) Change BIOS setting for PCMCIA from 'Auto' to 'CardBus' 4) Reboot Re. item (3) the other BIOS options 'Auto' and 'PCIC' might work now, but I have not had time to recheck. Thanks Nick and all others who contribute to the list Roy
