On Thursday 09 May 2002 00:00, Thomas Long was heard muttering:
While I do not endorse the tone of the original post, I can certainly identify with his frustration regarding the loss of YaST1. And please do not presume to speak for "the rest of us." I - for one - am very unhappy with SuSE's decision to remove YaST1. I and another colleague have given it our best shot to make a YaST1->YaST2 switchover and have ultimately given up. I believe YaST1 is simply a far more intuitive, flexible and useful tool than it's successor (when it comes to a number of specific tasks). That - along with what appears to me to be an unusually large litany of compaints about version 8.0 - are why we plan to sit out on the upgrades until a better built version is made available. I certainly would not leave SuSE over this point (their product is so obviously superior to any other distributor's, in my opinion), but I also think they need to be a bit more attentive to their users' expressed needs and desires. For the record, I think the recent request for feedback to their marketing people was such an effort.

------------------------------- Thanks Thomas for you insight into the Yast controversy. I guess I should have been a little more specific on "the rest of us" part as I knew there were several others upset at the present lack of Yast1. I honestly do not think removing Yast1 was/is as earth shattering as you might think though. Granted I have only came into Linux and SuSE linux last June with 7.2, so my experiences are quite different than yours if you have been using it longer. Yast2 suits me quite well for doing SuSE configurations, etc and I thought Yast1 was confusing and difficult to use for most things. Quite honestly, I believe SuSE has tried very hard to listen to the users and build a very good distro for not only large use, but desktop use as well. They have done a very good job. I am sure they knew there would be much screaming and yelling about Yast1, but it's time is over, both for usefulness and development costs, so we move on as we do with anything that continues to grow and expand. I think if you do some research into the complaints you noted, you will find and probably already do, that 99.9% of them relate more to the user or their hardware than it does SuSE itself! 8.0 is one of the best yet, that I have seen and installation and setup have been the smoothest experience one could have with an OS. I am sorry you are so needful of Yast1 that it keeps you from enjoying the new aspects of 8.0, but life goes on and hopefully so will SuSE with their excellent products.
