Hi all, I'm having a brain fart of a weekend I guess and have worked my way into no sound after I compiled a vanilla 2.4.18 kernel. I checked google 50 times and didn't get much info, even though I know this problem has probably been addressed on the list many times b4. I had a working SB Live b4 I upgraded from 2.4.16-4GB to vanilla 2.4.18. I made sure the proper things were selected in the kernel setup and I can get sound yes. The problem is, is that if I try to set up the sound card via yast2 I get an error about the fact that the snd-card-emu10k1 module could not be loaded. So I reinstalled the alsa rpms thinking "This has fixed it for me b4"...didn't put any of the modules into the /lib/modules/2.4.18/misc directory that it should have. So now I figure..hey..I've missed something and can't remember what to do. Now I turn to you. So next I also set up the sound card using "yast2 sound .oss" to let it use OSS. Sound works fine, until I reboot, then I have no sound card set up again. I have 3 questions then. 1. What the heck am I doing wrong with setting up alsa? Did something change with the newer kernels that I'm missing? 2. Why can't I get the OSS configuration to stick after a reboot? 3. What are the diff's/benefits to using alsa over OSS or visa versa if I can get one of them to stay working? As always I thank you in advance for your help. I hope it's just something simple that my hangover is preventing me from remembering. I thought of just d'loading the newest Alsa source and compiling it, but as I've never had any problems resetting this card b4 I am dying to know what i missed.
