We plan to replace our overheating AMD server with a PIV. How can we best do it so that all our user accounts and passwords are transferred?
Just copy the exact harddisk contents and do the small adjustments needed to for instance /etc/fstab and /etc/modules.conf and you should be running.
Actually, I'm interested in the answer too, but a better answer: We have a SuSE 7.3 machine, that was upgraded from a 7.2 machine (wasn't my idea; that never quite works properly), and when SuSE 8.0 comes out we intend to blast the machine and put it on cleanly. But, we want to keep user accounts. It's easy enough to backup /home, but to retain usernames and passwords. Would it be sufficient to back up /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow? I suspect not, but I don't know how this is to be done. -- Rachel
