Why are you setting the permissions to 711? Having
execute on a directory allows someone to enter the
directory, and do a listing (ls). However, since it
is not readable, the user (IE, your webserver) would
not be permitted to access it.
If you want to keep the webserver OUT of that
directory, set it to 700 and make sure the directory
is owned by something ELSE.

the root directory of my web server has a directory with subdirectories and files on each...
if i chmod 7111 on this directory, access is forbidden, but i can still see the subdirectories?
even i chmod 7111 on these subdirecties, i still can see them?
how do i block access to everything under this directory?
do i need an acl?
thanks.
