-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I have a box that I'm admining that is several hundred miles away with a novice linux user at the helm. Until today, she was fine on the net and had 0 problems.. but suddenly she couldn't email or "surf the web". That's when I got the "please help" phone call.. and tried several things -- all to no avail. I tried to connect to her machine, and that was a no-go -- I get about 97% packet loss (42 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 97% packet loss). There is another Windows machine in her house that is on a hub with her linux machine. The hub is connected to a cable modem, which supplies 2 IP addresses - -- 1 for each box. The Windows box is not having any problems with Internet connectivity. I tried small things -- "rcdhclient restart" -- which worked as it should but still didn't fix the problem. I had her go into yast2 - network/basic - and restart her whole network subsystem, which didn't work either. I had her swap the ethernet cable of the Windows machine to the Linux machine, and the situation didn't change, so it's nothing from the cable outward. Now here is the kicker -- if she types "ping 127.0.0.1" as +ROOT+, she gets the following response: ping: sendto Operation not permitted ping: wrote 127.0.0.1 64 chars, ret=-1 "ifconfig eth0" shows: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:5A:54:33:20 inet addr:64.192.118.153 Bcast:64.192.118.155 Mask:255.255.255.252 inet6 addr: fe80::204:5aff:fe54:3320/10 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:2252475 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1478290 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:86 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:2496872698 (2381.2 Mb) TX bytes:220191125 (209.9 Mb) Interrupt:5 Base address:0xa000 - -- so it's able to pull an IP address from the cable company just fine. Does anyone know or have any idea why ping is not able to work against her own native IP? I'd love to be able to fix her machine without rebooting it.. she just hit 6 months of uptime.
