01/01/02 01:21PM >>> Ok. After two years using Kppp, I finally have digital cable. I don't know how I got it working. My ISP only supplies instructions for Windows. But for the moment, after some random, uninformed twiddling, I am up. Now, how do I cover by butt? I feel unbelievably vulnerable. What services should I not allow? What should I do about security? I am on SuSE 7.1, KDE 2.2.1. Is the personal firewall useful? Help!
Albert, You made a wise choice with your cable modem, you will love it. I went with a hardware solution back when I had an all-Windows network. I bought a cable modem router (Netgear RT314 to be specific) which allowed me to share the cable modem with my other computers in my house and provided some basic security. This device has a lot of options for filtering Internet traffic aimed at your computer(s). I run a web server on my SuSE box, so I accept Internet traffic on port 80 through the router. You would not need this though as you can use SuSEFirewall2 for your security needs and IP Masquerading for sharing the Internet connection. Good luck, Josh
