Try to select 24 and then check /var/log/XFree86.0.log to see what bpp X is
using. In my case I see the following:
(**) R128(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(II) R128(0): Pixel depth = 24 bits stored in 4 bytes (32 bpp pixmaps)
(==) R128(0): Default visual is TrueColor
...
(--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp
In other words, the driver uses 32bpp but uses a depth of 24.

How do I get 32bit color in 7.3? Yast2 will let me have 16bit only and Sax2 gives me a choice of 8,16 or 24bit.
