It turns out that if I use the default but incorrect memory size of 8192kB on my card everything's fine. The problem appears to be me trying expert mode to reflect the accurate 16MB the card has. Now why that would cause a problem of this sort is a mystery to me. For now I have revoked 'expert' level authorization for myself. This puzzles me: After ftp-installing SuSE 7.3 and fighting my way through sax, I don't get a visible mouse cursor. Menus and mouse buttons work fine. IMPS/2, /dev/psaux PII 350, Matrox G200 PCI, xfree_svga [ I vaguely remember having had a similar problem before, but not the cause or fix. ] The sax configuration was 'strange' in that I believe the card and display weren't properly detected, so there's some potential for me having made a mess of it, but what?
