Is the command strings a tool for reverse engineering??
No, such tools would be a violation of the DMCA and would not be allowed to be distributed.
What do you get when you run strings on a binary?? The actual code or parts of the binary that where able to be converted to ascii??
The latter.
P.S.: Any practical / real-life uses for strings??
One that comes to mind is if you're debugging something and you want to know which binary is responsible for a certain error message. strings *|grep message can be a real help at times. I've also seen incidental use of strings in forensic analysis, in trying to determine what rootkit a binary came from. It's a handy tool to have around, like many little trinkets in the GNU/Unix world //Anders
