Sound works perfectly on my laptop (IBM 600E) when I install SuSE 7.2 and uncomment the appropriate lines in modules.conf. When I install SuSE 7.3, however, I get an error telling me that the sound module can not be found. I look for the ALSA sound module it complains about and am unable to find in the usual /lib/modules/.... path. Is there something obvious missing from a default install or am I just confused? OK, I'm usually confused about something but this was a no brainer setup in SuSE 7.2 so I'm just a little surprised. I checked to see if there was a alsa-driver package that didn't get installed but I don't find such a package on the CDs so I assume the main alsa package contains all the required modules.
It would be easier to answer your question if you told the kernel version you are using. ALSA worked for me on T21 under SuSE 7.1 kernel 2.4.2. I then upgraded system to SuSE 7.3 and installed Mantel's kernel 2.4.14. No sound. Updated kernel to Mantel's 2.4.15 and got sound. Actually, it was a bug in ALSA 0.5.12 drivers. Just updated to Mantel's 2.4.16 (2.4.15 has a severe bug screwing up ext2 filesystems on umount), sound works. -Kastus
