Hi John. Hi everyone.
I think that we are getting somewhere with this advice. We deleted all the content of /tmp without any consequences on reboot or on the lan. We could locate *.tmp but could not work out how to delete them safely as there were far too many to delete via 'rm' by hand and rm -r is scary.
find / -name *.tmp -exec rm {} \; also find / -name core -exec rm {} \; also, the command: find /home/*/.netscape/cache/ -name *.gif -exec rm {} \; will find all .gif files in any home directory cache. That way if you are in dire need you can delete selective downloaded file types that are wasting space. Substitute *.gif for the file type for example *.wav, *.jpg. If you want to empty everyone's cache at once: find /home/*/.netscape/cache/*/ -name *.* -exec rm -f {} \; Of course you can use these commands in other dirs as well but with EXTREME CAUTION. Also I wouldn't use the *.* with rm -f anywhere but in a cache dir. Then, the only thing that will be noticeable is the web pages will all be refreshed for each user the next time they log in. phew! boy was that a mouth full. hope it helps. John <snip>
