Hello, Guy. I have been looking through a number of threads out on the http://www.amdmb.com website, and found one that pointed to the newer BIOS more accurately reporting the CPU temperature. If that is true, then the temperatures were always that high, and are still the same as they were. Only now we can see the truth. However, these temperatures of 60C at idle really are too high, and are not good for the longevity of the CPUs. I realise that this does not answer the "why does my Asus mobo run my CPU so hot" question, but it does explain the sudden jump in temperature after upgrading the BIOS. I remember when the A7M266 was first released, Tom's Hardware did a review of a number of AMD760 based mobos. He made mention at that time that Asus had only used a two stage power setup instead of the three stage that the other boards employed. I can't imagine why they did this, since it certainly wasn't to keep the price of the board down. It is still one of the most expensive AMD760 based boards out there. This matter has certainly shaken my faith in Asus' products. My previous favourite was Tyan, but they seem to be very selective in their product offerings. Their products are totally rock solid (I have four of their boards in use here, including three duallies), but they just don't seem to have the selection that the other manufacturers offer. I am currently seeking a new mobo upon which to base an Athlon XP machine for my parents in Cyprus, which has a very hot climate. Asus *were* top of my list until this all came to light. Now I just don't which mobo maker to trust. Bye for now, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: unixuser@flashmail.com [mailto:unixuser@flashmail.com] Sent: 30 October 2001 10:43 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Cc: tsd@asus.com.tw; tsd@asus.com; sales@asuscom.de Subject: [SLE] [OT] Asus K7* CPU temp, some answers Hello all Recently, there have been a number of threads here about Asus (A7V133 - A7V133A - A7M266) motherboards running at abnormally high temperatures. Like mine does. I started the first thread some time ago, because I wanted to know if I was the only one. To my surprise I discovered that a lot of people where affected, and that the problem occured on several types of Asus-boards. Not getting any decent response from Asus support, I started a search into this matter. And I found out a number of very interesting things, including the reasons behind this. I documented the whole thing on my website, and I'll follow it up. You can find it at http://unixmafia.port5.com, under news/special feature. If anyone has any comments, suggestions or information, please mail me at: unixmafia@flashmail.com (OpenPGP key available on the site). I apologize for the OT post, but because of the previous threads, I think some people will be interested.
