Longer than 15 seconds, enough time to make a brew. Someone said it needs to run in a window therefore it can not start from a console, however to get a window, I need X and I thought sax2 should start from a console to setup X. Changing to chvt 7 does nothing, just a flashing double cursor. I tried getting the window for sax2 by starting it from a working xfree86 3.36, but it fails.
Any other ideas, users of a G200?

LOTS SNIPPED I have got sax2 to run from the console on my system with the Matrox G200, in my case it was a mouse problem that hung a GUI startup and I had to use a console to start sax2. So I am very confident that sax2 can be started that way. A couple of questions/suggestions: Have you completed installation of SuSE 7.2 using Yast1? Did you get any of the video card and monitor setup during the installation? If not have you tried to get a simplified X established and then tune with sax2 later? By a simplfied X established, I would suggest using a VESA setting for the monitor that is less than your monitor is actually capable of (this should remove the possibility of the monitor settings causing you a complexity). With your monitor set a relaxed value what does the SuSE setup determine to be your video card? Did SuSE auto select the correct card and is the memory determined by SuSE equal to or LESS than your actual video card memory? With a relaxed monitor setting and the correct video card selection then SuSE should be able to give you a functional X. It may only be 800x600 and 256 colours, but it will be X and from there you can tune/fix using sax2. Alternatively, if the setup of X during installation is a problem you can skip the X setting on installation altogether and after SuSE is installed then use Yast1 to set up an X. This is the method I almost always used when installing SuSE 7.1 as frequently I could not get X setup during installation. Try and setup without using 3D acceleration. Assuming that the establishment of a running X is more important than whether a non-running X is 3D accelerated. If X setup is skipped during the installation, then after a login to console use Yast1 to set up X. If sax from Yast does not work then use xf86config. Overall my suggestions are that you try and set up an absolute minimum X first, then try and tune it to maximize the performance of your video card and monitor. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government?
