Check the price of the accessories 'cos that's where they hit you.

I use an Epson 740, which was a good price when I bought it but seems, at least in Holland, to have had it's price hiked up. It works fine, although I had to twiddle a little with a few parameters on a2ps to get it to print a whole page without losing the last line. But my namesake above makes a very good point. The cost of replacement inkjet catridges can be phenomenal. I was shocked by the price of a black ink cartridge, at least the official Epson ones. I bought a catridge from a different manafacturer at half the price .. despite dire warnings in Epson literature about shortening the life of your printer if you don't use their cartridges. You can also get refill kits if you search around. As has been pointed out to you Epson are very cool about releasing their specs for driver development. I just bought an Epson USB scanner and it works fine, a tad slower than under windows at high resolutions..but good enough. I have to say though, from my previous experience and of others cheap ink-jet printers don't usually have a very long life expectancy for heavy duty use. Sadly my funds do not go to a postscript literate laser printer... Whatever you do before you buy btw, make sure it is *known* to work under Linux, seems an obvious thing to say..but I will say it anyway ! -- Regards Cliff
