Hi,
Here is what I use:
1. If I am at the console then I use a program called "jed".
2. If I am using X11, then I use a program called "Nedit".
Both offer syntax highlighting :-)
I hate Vi, incidentally :-)
I have been using vi since the day it was released on the world. It is impossible to fall in love with it. I once was on a project where I was mr UNIX for a team of people 90% of whom had been brought up on VMS and it's editors. I cannot tell you the grief they gave me about it (I told them to write to Bill Joy). I just had to tell them complaining about vi is like complaining about the weather. It just is. And btw this is not an invitation to ask me about "how do you do this in vi !" The very best book ever written on vi was what started as a customer document for Hewlett Packard. They eventually published it -- but it's title escapes me..something like "The Ultimate Guide to Vi" ..I recommend it ... although as pointed out above your Linux system is blessed with many fine alternatives. I will give neophytes one tip...if things start to behave bizarrely in response to your commands check the caps-lock key is not on. Big letters don't mean the same as small ones... If you must use vi use it's nicer offspring vim. If you are young and fit in mind and body, learn emacs. -- Regards Cliff
