No, that won't overwrite your current GCC installation because the SuSE package will install GCC 3.0 in /opt/experimental
And as I understand it, it's NOT a good idea to be using GCC 3.0 yet, as a lot of things, including the kernel, don't like it.
You may have problems to compile C++ code like Qt and KDE but for other things like the kernel you can go safely. I used GCC 3.0.1 to compile the latest (2.4.10) kernel and some GNOME/GTK programs without any problems.
