Thanks to those who responded to my original message. I tried turning off anti-aliasing, but it didn't make any difference. So I renamed my .kde directory and all the mcop stuff and restarted kde. This did the trick and I didn't lose any of my previous settings in kde. All I had to do was set up the internet dialer again (which took about 1 minute), and so far all is well. I just wish I knew WHAT got changed and WHERE so if it should ever happen again I could just go fix it.......
