What I didn't do was --force --nodeps the installation of the modutils rpm and apparently it didn't install the first time complaining about dependencies. Did that to begin with still no joy.
Downloaded k_i386-2.4.7-17.i386.rpm and installed it with rpm -U --force. then downloaded and installed modutils-2.4.7-1.i386.rpm from kernel.org. Ran lilo and mk_initrd
^^^^^^^^^.
When rebooting the new stuff I get: kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root filesystem.
