I did not follow this discussion until now, so bear with me if I repeat
what was said before, but this is how I got mine working last night:
1. cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
This should show you the list of CDROMs recognized by the system and
their
capabilities.
2. For each CDROM listed there, append to the lilo boot line something
like:
"<device>=ide-scsi"
So in my case /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info shows hda as a DVD drive and hdc
as
a CDRW driver, so the line I have in lilo.conf is:
append="BOOT_FILE=/boot/vmlinuz hdc=ide-scsi hda=ide-scsi"
3. Modified rc.config and added to the INITRD_MODULES line "ide-scsi"
So in my case it looks like this:
INITRD_MODULES="aic7xxx reiserfs ide-scsi"
This will eliminate the need to modprobe
4. Run
SuSEconfig --nonewpackage
5. Run
mk_initrd
5. Run lilo -v
6. If you already use SCSI on your system, you don't have to modify
modules.conf, otherwise set the
alias scsi_hostadapter off
to be
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
6. Reboot your computer and hope for the best ;-)
7. Once you have rebooted, repeat step 1. You now should hopefully see
the
device names of the CD devices as sr*.
8. Modify the /dev/cdrom /dev/cdwritable, /dev/dvd, whatever to point to
the
new device names.
9. Give it a try.

Let me give you the details of my configuration. Maybe something will help:
Plextor 12/10/32 connected as Secondary Master on IDE port 2.
My /etc/fstab file:
/dev/hda6 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda2 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 # /dev/cdrecorder /cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/hda3 /data1 auto noauto,user 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0 /dev/dvd /dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda1 /windows/C vfat noauto,user 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 2 /dev/sda4 /zip vfat noauto,user 0 0 /dev/sr0 /cdrecorder auto rw,noauto,user,exec 0 0
And, like I said, I have a sym link from /dev/cdrecorder to /dev/hdc
Added "hdc=ide-scsi" to Lilo boot line using Yast1 Added "alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi" to /etc/modules.conf Added "modprobe ide-scsi" to boot.local Changed the desktop icon to point to /dev/sr0
Thats what I did to get mine working.
Hope this helps Fred. If there's anything else I can give you, let me know.

Fred, do you have it listed in fstab as sr0 or scd0? Mine is sr0. Try that and see if it works.
'Same error! This is really getting to be a pain in the butt!! I've contacted suse support, but I'm not expecting any response anytime soon. This is not only a real puzzle, but I'm at a point where I MUST have this drive working!!
