Much mail is generated on this list about reiser fs. Can someone give me an honest evaluation of it's advantages compared to all the problems people have with it. assume I know nothing (i will RTFM.. :))
I'm not sure about "the problems" since I've never experienced any since I started using ReiserFS with SuSE 7.1. Some have posted problems making reference to ReiserFS but these are nearly always attributed to not loading appropriate module support at boot time (particularly when /boot is ReiserFS). The most obvous advantage is the time it takes to boot your system; checking the file systems' integrity takes a few seconds (even after a bad shutdown). In theory, your data can always be reconstructed from the journal. Other advantages include better use of disk space, particularly when there are lots of small files and directories. Also, ReiserFS is more efficient when it comes to disk access/writes etc. (albeit there is an overhead since the journal is accessed before data is written to the drive). A real bonus is ReiserFS and LVM (Logical Volume Manager) together. Here you can pool your drives into a single space and then create your partitions how you like with the ability to change their size on the fly. Also, you can use striping if you use SCSI disks. M
