That worked great apart from the fact that it seems to expect smb.conf to be in /etc/lib/smb.conf I made a symbolic link and it works fine. thanks dids
use this ./configure it works
./configure --prefix=/etc --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/sbin --mandir=/us r/share/doc/packages/samba/manpages --with-lockdir=/var/lock/samba --with-swatdir=/usr/lib/samba/swat/include

To start with I noticed that samba placed the files in
/usr/local/samba/bin
instead of /usr/bin
So i changed the prefix etc in the ./configure
however
If i try and call /etc/init.d/smb start
I get an error code returned of 255 from startproc.
What am I doing wrong ?
