It's a scsi external (40 pin I think). Using ahx7xxx I believe. Looking at the info in kcontrol indicates it's not loaded. This was fine before either changing settings for the cdr and/or upgrading KDE2.2.1pre for SuSE (last time it gave me two desktop icons for the zip). Curtis. Well, that kinda of worked. Now I get the message: "mount:/dev/sda4: unknown device".
Is this a symlink or permission problem?
Neither of them. Usually, it is caused by proper kernel modules not being loaded. What kind of interface does your zip drive have? Is it scsi? parallel? USB? IDE?
The best solution is to set up aliases in /etc/modules.conf. A quick hack is to modprobe required modules manually.

Ok, now the zip is root only. I have tried to change this to no avail. I get: "mount: only root can mount /dev/sda4 on /media/zip. I would like to know the permission/setting for /dev/sda4, /media/zip, /zip (the sym link), and fstab entries.
Did you include "user" option in /dev/sda4 entry of /etc/fstab file? It should look like:
/dev/sda4 /media/zip auto noauto,user 0 0 ^^^^
