Actually, there are. There's options for Pentium I, Pentium I MMX, Pentium II / Celeron, Pentium III, Pentium 4 (why didn't Intel use 'IV' instead of '4'?), 486, 386, K6-X, and Athlon / Duron. As you did mention, however, there is no need for Sean to recompile a kernel after switching to a Pentium III.
