Well, no beginner here: heavy Linux user for nearly 10 years, user (and tweaker) of several different distributions including SuSE-5.1/6.1 and now 7.2, and this 7.2 has given me far more unexpected trouble, in places where I would not expect it, than any other. Solving the problems is usually not trivial.
To get back to the point: fvwm2, as installed off the CDs, simply does not work. If there's a way to get it to work, I'll be delighted
This may be irrelevant to you, but I've never touched fvwm2 before, so I can assure you I haven't 'tweaked' any rc files, so my fvwm2 can be said to be out of the box, and it works perfectly. I tried selecting it from kdm, and I ran startx from the command line, and both times it ran.
