Thanks for the prompt reply
A couple of simple question here, 1: what is supposed to be entered in the domain part if one is strictly using an ISP (dial-in-service)?
Nothing in particular.
I have now changed my host to hostname=basslake domain=org /etc/hosts , looks as follows. # IP-Address Full-Qualified-Hostname Short-Hostname # 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.2 basslake.org basslake This is more like what I want. I am treating basslake.org as an unqulified domain , in /etc/mail/genericstable I generated the sendmail.cf file by using linux.mc as per your advice , this worked fine to create a sendmail.cf file. Still , If I use mutt to send mails out through sendmail, sendmail appends to headers as follows From: root@basslake.127.0.0.2 I need the from header to read like, basslake@xtalwind.net I set everything that was suggested, in the docs, and from on this list, but still have the same results. SMART_HOST define(`SMART_HOST', `smtp:[smtp.xtalwind.net]')dnl MASQUERADE_AS(`xtalwind.net')dnl GENERICS_DOMAIN(localhost.localdomain localhost localhost)dnl And I am still having trouble . There is definately something I'm doing , or not doing that's causing this. I was suspecting that Envelope_Masqurade may be an answer, the Feature is in the sendmail.cf , but I don't know the syntax to turn it on , or what option to put with it. ##### $Id: masquerade_envelope.m4,v 8.9 1999/02/07 07:26:10 gshapiro Exp $ ### Thanks very much for helping On Mon, 25 Jun 2001, Joost van der Lugt wrote:

[Jun 25. 2001 18:10]: Hi all
I have been having an ongoing problem with the suse-linux, networking configuration. Mainly where I am supposed to enter a name for my computer, and then supply a fully qualified domain. I have no domain name, I dial out to an ISP who is the owner of the dynamic naming server (dns).
A couple of simple question here, 1: what is supposed to be entered in the domain part if one is strictly using an ISP (dial-in-service)?
Nothing in particular.
2: What do many of the SuSE linux users, that are strictly (dial-in to an ISP), put in the domain numbers section of (Host/Domain options), in yast or rc.config.?
No idea:-)
3: Is it leagle to use the localhost 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.2 , or some variant of it.?
Yep.
4: what does SuSE suggest as a solution fot the many users that have this same situation.?
Mmm, SuSE I do not know, but they seem to have a dialup choice in /etc/rc.config.d/sendmail.rc.config, if it works I don't know, don't seem to remember this (conveniently)...
This is all caused by the persistance of sendmail, to append root, or usr to the From: header. eg. From: root@myisp.net and of course they will not allow me to use their domain name as an originating from my machine - so this is definitely a case for some support tips from SuSE, or anyone here that may wish to comment .
Shouldn't happen at all, you should be able to sent mail to root as long as in -assuming that you use mutt- you don't set the hostname, instead set your e-mail address (set from=" "), and adding the alias:
root: you, \root
to /etc/mail/alias file and run newaliases.
set in /etc/rc.config.d/sendmail.rc.config "no"
and use something like: ------------------------------------------------- divert(0)dnl VERSIONID(`@(#)sendmail.mc 8.11.0-1 (SuSE) 20010510') OSTYPE(suse-linux)dnl DOMAIN(generic)dnl GENERICS_DOMAIN(localhost.localdomain localhost) MASQUERADE_AS(yourhost.com)dnl FEATURE(masquerade_envelope)dnl FEATURE(nocanonify)dnl FEATURE(genericstable) define(`confCF_VERSION',`user's cf - 05/03/01')dnl define(`SMART_HOST',`smtp8:[mail1.yourhost.com]')dnl define(`confCOPY_ERRORS_TO',`Postmaster')dnl define(`confDEF_CHAR_SET',`ISO-8859-1')dnl FEATURE(redirect)dnl MAILER(local)dnl MAILER(smtp)dnl -------------------------------------------- as your linux.mc file, then run from /etc/mail:
m4 /usr/share/sendmail/m4/cf.m4 linux.mc > sendmail.cf
and do a rcsendmail stop and rcsendmail start
done
(aside from the fact that Ben gave some good advice about running sendmail not as a dameon, this however involves modifying how you call fetchmail, look for the thread a few mails back...)
Or did I oversee something (you never know...)?
