You're not running lpd from inetd, are you?
If you do a 'grep lpd /etc/inetd.conf' is the line commented (#) or not?

Thanks, Anders. That did the trick. I commented out that line in inetd.conf, restarted inetd, and now it looks like it should work (I did it all remote since I'm still home [a sysadmin has GOT to love Linux;-)]).
