It seem to be related to a message a get when I logout via gui to kdm and then back in. If you logout and look at the console message in the kdm login screen you might see a message like 'nv still has a que (not exact but that the jist of the message). I have noticed that if I kill kde/kdm I can also get the console. I can do the same thing from init 3 and then when returning from gui to console a get a list of service/programs for X/kde that haven't been released. Just a note. Ah, but you're probably using the Gnome login manager gdm. The problem occurs only with kdm or xdm.
It's probably more work than you want to undertake, but I'd be interested in the result of switching to kdm and leaving everything else as is.
I've been through this trouble (well, not this one) just out of curiosity. I installed a fresh 7.1 (FTP-version) on a spare partition. I installed just a minimal system with X, KDE2 and the nvidia glx package. I didn't even upgrade to the latest drivers, just use SuSE's package. And guess what: If I login, then logout I can't get to my console anymore. I've tried copying my /etc/X11/xdm from my other installation, tried copying /opt/kde2/share, but no change. It's probably something in the binaries of kde2 that SuSE ships.
I tried copying the kdm binary but of course this didn't work because it was an other kde-version, copying the whole kde directory didn't work either. I'd say the best solution is to download and compile kde yourself. Or wait till the next kde comes out. :)
What also might be interesting, if I killed my X-server with ctrl-alt-backspace instead of loggign out, my consoles were still there.
