Just to give you an idea of the speed increase, my dual PII/450 system with 512MB of RAM would take 15 minutes to compile the linux kernel + modules.
My new system Athlon/1.33Ghz + 512MB of RAM takes just over 4 minutes. The speed increase is astounding!
I believe it, but I also cannot ignore SPEC2000 results (http://www.spec.org/osg/cpu2000/results/cpu2000.html) since my programs are similar to some of the SPEC test codes: CINT2000 CFP2000 base peak base peak Gigabyte GA-7DX Motherboard, 1.33GHz Athlon 482 539 414 445 Precision WorkStation 530, 1.70 GHz P4 575 593 593 609 (The higher the better. Details are on the spec web site). Moreover, there are no dual Athlon system available now. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
