Thanks Lenz I checked /var/log/rpm got conflictsindex.rpmx 16384xMay 3 14:04xx File: None x x fileindex.rpm x2625536xMay 3 14:04xx Location: 345h:9FD9h x x groupindex.rpm x 16384xMay 3 14:04xx Mode: drwxr-xr-x (0755) x x nameindex.rpm x 16384xMay 3 14:04xx Links: 27 x x packages.rpm x9373640xMay 3 14:04xx Owner: root/root x x providesindex.rpm x 49152xMay 3 14:04xx Size: 1024 b (2 blocks) x x requiredby.rpm x 86016xMay 3 14:04xx Created: May 3 14:04 x x triggerindex.rpm x 16384xMay 3 14:04 This seems to be normal - I was woried that , because I deleted old rpm-backups in /var/adm/backup/rpm that I may have messed up something. hopefully all is well now. My - /usr/share/packages is intact just that there was no entery in there fot the Gaim that I just installed . also my /etc/rc.config - says that RPMDB_BACKUP_DIR="/var/adm/backup/rpmdb" and MAX_RPMDB_BACKUPS="3" seems ok I upgraded this partition /hdb5 was suse6.4 with my suse 70 pro cd's I will have to look in to it more because I don't think the backup feature is working . Mainly because the rpm-backups I deleted were there from 1999 . None of the new rpm-backups were in there after install of 70. I have suse7.0 installed on another fresh partition that I made with fdisk /dev/hdb6 and the rpm-backups have already shown up there,/hdb6 and are not showing up here /hdb5, this is where /hdb5, I am updating kernel ,- test new software, compiles, etc. I'll stop here for now - but Thanks again for the good tips . I ran rpm --rebuilddb and I says nothing .
Which is not bad at all. Your RPM database seems to be intact - have a look at /var/lib/rpm - this is where the main RPM databases are located.
but there is still nothing in /var/adm/backup/rpmdb maybe some will show up eventually.
The creation of RPM database backups is defined by two variables in /etc/rc.config: "RPMDB_BACKUP_DIR" (which defaults to /var/adm/backup/rpmdb) and "MAX_RPMDB_BACKUPS" (which defaults to 5). Do these variables exist and do they have a valid value? The daily cron job /etc/cron.daily/aaa_base_backup_rpmdb uses these values to create the backups.
I installed Gaim rpm yesterday , and there was no package info left in /usr/share/doc/packages , so I thought that rpmdb had problems.
Huh, /usr/share/doc/packages was completely empty? Or was the gaim info missing?
