I've figured out why the X4.0.3 installation was incomplete, leading to the KDM/XDM errors. It seems that if you go to http://suse.com/support/xsuse/index.html, there's a subsection called "XFree-86-4.0.3 has been released". If you click on the first link you get to a location on the XFree86 website that takes you to a set of binary patches for updating from X4.0.2 to X4.0.3. Those binary patches are apparently inadequate, because a shared library component is missing. But if you instead click on the second link, you get to a SuSE location that has a bunch of rpms, and updating via those RPMs does work (aside from a problem with the newest SAX2 missing a dependency on intlfonts-ttf). Anyone who does the update right away from the second link would never know about the problem with the update from the first link. Paul Abrahams
