Another interesting discovery: if I choose GDM as my login manager, I get the graphical interface, even though I don't get it with XDM or KDM. I wonder if the problem could be Nvidia-related (I have one of those)? I did a SAX reconfiguration after installing XFree86 4.0.3 but didn't change the old settings as far as I know. I'm using the nv driver.

Can you try checking /etc/init.d/xdm and seeing what you have in there? Mine is attached, in case yours is "wrong".
I did a "diff" on the one in my system and the one you sent. No differences. The reason I suspect the NVidia driver is that there was a phenomenon reported here a few weeks ago and again in the last few days, which I encountered myself, whereby using KDM with a certain set of NVidia drivers produced the "black screen on shutdown" effect while using GDM with that same driver did not. Mismatched versions are the curse of Linux. Talk about ad hoc knowledge!!! Paul Abrahams
