I've just installed XFree 4.0.3. The installation seemed to go correctly, but when I rebooted I got a console login prompt rather than the KDM login screen. Twice I went into Yast1 and selected graphical login/KDM, but it had no effect even after rebooting. Now the only way I can get into X is by logging in in console mode and doing a startx.
I observed that kdm wasn't on root's path, so I kludged a link to kdm from /usr/X11R6/bin to /opt/kde2/bin/kdm. That didn't help either (and seemed vulnerable to later updates).
How can I get KDM back?

First, check /etc/inittab to see what the default runlevel is. If it is 3, then change it to 5 and reboot. If it's 3:
# default runlevel id:3:initdefault:
Change it to 5: # default runlevel id:5:initdefault:
The default run level was 5, which is what I would have expected since I wouldn't think that the XFree 4.0.3 installation would twiddle that part of my system. For further confirmation, the change date of /etc/inittab is April 5, so whatever I just did did not poke it.
Second, if it's already 5, then KDM is failing, and you have a KDM problem.
I get the same thing when I specify XDM as login manager.
Since you stated that you can use startx to launch X, then it's not an X server problem. Can you go into kde2->control center->information->X server and see what the X server information is? It should be "Vendor String->The XFree86 Project, Inc", "Vendor Release Number->4003" and "Version Number->11.0". If it's not, then 4.0.3 hasn't been installed correctly.
All of that checks out. I assume that the XFree86 installation clobbered something or other but not X itself. I also note that the boot-time messages indicate that KDM (or XDM) has been started, and /var/log/messages does not indicate any problems. Any more ideas, Steve? Paul Abrahams
