The key is in /usr/src/linux-2.2.18.SuSE/Documentation/devices.txt (or
do a "locate devices.txt" to find where if not running 2.2.18
kernel). block-major-11 is SCSI CD-ROM drives. char-major-9 is SCSI
tape drives. If you have neither of these devices (i.e., IDE CD/tape
or none), add the following to /etc/modules.conf or change it if it
already exists:
alias block-major-11 off
alias char-major-9 off
If you do have SCSI CD-ROM and tape drives, you will have to dig out
what their drivers are and substitute the driver module name for
"off".

Hey,
I've seen people ask this before but now I can't find it in the archives:
My logs are full of messages like the following:
Apr 19 16:20:32 eqr001 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-11 Apr 19 16:20:32 eqr001 last message repeated 15 times Apr 19 16:20:32 eqr001 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-9 Apr 19 16:20:32 eqr001 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-9
What is modprobe talking about ?
And how do I get rid of them? Probably commenting something out of /etc/modules.conf will do it, but then why is it in module.conf in the first place - surely it's supposed to do something?
