Well, previously I used YaST to install the 2.4.2-5 kernel and the lastest modutils. I lost sound, ethernet, and wouldn't run the "0.9-769.nv_glx" drivers and lsmod showed only the nvidia drivers, the base usb module, and the the adaptec "7xxx" mod. Although the original 2.4.0 kernel would run as before but no mods listed. So, I reinstalled 7.1 again (ww needent go into how many times I've done this - learning can be painful). Now, the sys is back up, tweaked for gaming and runs well, but try to install modpacks for UT using the 'umodunpack.pl". It would just run without any results for a couple of hours and then give me a "OUT OF MEMORY" message or quickly stop after running with a "Terminated" message. I read in some of the posts that there seemed to be a possible memory leak with the 2.4.0-4GB/k_deflt_24 kernel. Once again I used YaST to ftp the rpms of the earlier version of 2.4.2, the 2.4.2-4GB, with the (I hope) appropriate modutls (think it was 2.4.2-14). Well, same thing. Original 2.4.0 kernel booted but without sound or eth0 working. Tried to run SuSEconfig, ldconfig, depmod -a, etc... and no difference - and YaST and YaST2 would give "there was in error setting up the sound card or the nic. Xconsole at boot says Kernel can't find map. Boot messages during start up can't find the 2.4.0 modules.conf and modprobes return that there are it can't find the modules (any of them). Now, if I boot into the 2.4.2 kernel it will start with both the sound and nic running as it should, and no output with "lsmod" - but returns alot of "unresolved symbols" for the nVidia 0.9-769 drivers/kernel mod. I pico'ed into the XF86Config file and changed the driver from "nvidia" to "nv" and now the 2.4.2 kernel will boot into X - but without the optimzed vid - drivers. (also, the kernel say the nVidia mods conflict with the mesa mods. I earlier removed the mesa mod and reinstalled the nVidia mods, no conflict - but still "unresolved symbols" with 2.4.2 and X). I copied the rc.config.old to the new rc.config and now running the command "lsmod" will return all the appropriate mods (except the NVIDIA, because it doesn't like it - sigh). Any suggestions, comments, clues, flames, harsh startements about this situation? Thanx in advance. Signed - Clueless, befuddled, and bewildered.
