Definitely need some kernel help here. I am using Suse 7.0. A few days ago I compiled/installed kernel 2.4.3. As soon as I did that, I could no longer connect to the internet using my 56K modem which had previously worked fine.
Using another computer, I d/l'ed the updated ppp.rpm that would work with 2.4.3 and copied it onto diskette; however, when I tried to mount /floppy in order to copy it from diskette onto my linux box, I couldn't do it. I received this message: /dev/fd0 has wrong major or minor number.
I figured I would burn a cd and copy the ppp.rpm from cdrom onto my linux box. I cannot mount /cdrom now, as well. I receive this reported error: mount: /dev/cdrom has wrong major or minor number.
What do I need to modify to be able to mount these devices? Do I need to modify and I guess recompile the kernel so that it will recognize my devices again?
Most likely you forgot to include floppy and cdrom support in your new kernel. Have a look at the suse manuals---there should be a section on kernel configuration. It's also a good idea to make sure you can still boot your old and working kernel after installing a new one. See the section on configuring LILO in the SuSE manual.
