Hi Success compiling the 2.4.2 With, linux-2.4.2.SuSE(sources installed) . 2.4.2-4GB from (ftp../suse/updates/71) , ALSA Working /w MIDI - MIDI 0-0, Plays to the KAWAI-X150-D synth-keyboard. - record MIDI - (still in progress) . linux-2.4.2.SuSE(sources), - I compiled 2 kernels . one with oss,synth-support, 'alsa wouldn't compile without module sound (soundcore)', soundcard=ymfpci, and couple other sound-cards&options opl3 mad16 . . this shouldn't be a problem with alsa , because SuSE has practically all the modules enabled in the sound part of '.config' for the 2.4.2-GB - I say this , because ALSA Readme, says not to enable modules, and options, just sound support, yet the 2.4.2-4GB kernel has practically all of the stuff in sound enabled, with no conflict with the separate alsa modules. The 2.4.2-4GB has also experimental=yes . this kernel seems to work pretty good'' so far as I have used it. plot thickens' . . . . . back to this later. Thanks to some tips from this list, (see - suse sdb, ' How to make boot floppy for Lilo ' I set Lilo up to use all 4 kernels, 2.2.16, 2.4.2-4GB, and 2, 2.4.2's compiled from the, ' linux-2.4.2.SuSE ' sources. On the 2 kernels that I compiled, ALSA (alsa-driver-0.9.0beta3), compiles modules, and puts them where I tell it to, /lib/modules/2,4,2/kernel/drivers/sound. When booting up the system, ALSA will not modprobe the 'snd-card-ymfpci' , I can use /sbin/init.d/boot.local to modprobe the modules, sound.o, ymfpci.o,snd-mixer-oss, accept the module, 'snd-card-ymfpci' (doesn't insmod) - A mess to do things that way, ok as a half fast work-around maybe. Sound works, but no midi without snd-card-ymfpci.o module. 2.4.2-4GB kernel loads the 'snd-card-ymfpci' module, at boot up , '(how'd ya do it SuSE ?? ). nice feature ! I made a /usr/src/linux/.config , by using make xconfig, and choosing the config in 2.2.16 source directory /usr/src/2.2.16 , I also checked the configs for the pre-compiled 2.4.2 suse kernels, to see what was enabled , and what was not enabled .
