My nslookup shows me the correct mail server i.e snoopy.esaravana.com
This is were I stand now.
I have two machines on esaravana.com 1. hostname: charlie 2.hostname:snoopy DNS on Solaris 8 Web/Mail/Gateway on SuSE 7.1 Both have user name: Sundar mail test scenarios *********************************************************** Test1 on snoopy(Web/Mail/Gateway on SuSE 7.1) from root@snoopy to sundar@esaravana.com send and receive successful
Test2 on snoopy(Web/Mail/Gateway on SuSE 7.1) from sundar@esaravana.com to sundar@esaravana.com send and receive successful
Test3 send from snoopy, receive on charlie from sundar@esaravana.com to sundar@esaravana.com send and receive successful
Test3 send from charlie, receive on charlie from sundar@esaravana.com to sundar@esaravana.com send fails with following message Mail Client side(Charlie): Response: 501 5.1.8
.. Domain of sender address sundar@esaravanana.com does not exist. Mail server side(snoopy):
I'm don't have time to fully read you post, but I am noticing this from the above error message: the error message mentions the domain esaravanana.com, while the rest of the message refers to esaravana.com (spelling difference). A quick scan shows this mispelling in another context earlier in the tread (which I don't have readily to hand). I'm not sure if this is an error as you copied the message, or if this was the exact text of the message.

2) you can send external e-mail( this e-mail is sent from sundar on esaravana.com) Right now I have only these two machines and they are not connected to outside world. I want to setup everything, configure the firewall and put it on the internet
the user Sundar is on the snoopy (right?) and when you try to send an e- mail to sundar@esaravana.com from the same user, the DNS server doesn't known who is the Mail Exchanger (MX).
Please try - nslookup - nslookup
set querytype=mx esaravana.com -----> Now you should see: esaravana.com preference = 10, mail exchanger = snoopy.esaravana.com
I think that the domain in sendmail files isn't correct Is your hostname "snoopy"? Yes and it's my mail server, web server, gateway ----> Try to send a mail from sundar@snoopy to sundar@snoopy.
Successful
------> View /etc/sendmail.cw, where you find the domain that the sendmail manages. Here there must be "snoopy", "snoopy.esaravana.com" and "esaravana.com". I did not see this file in my system. So I created one. ---------> How you have created the user sundar? It must be inserted into /etc/aliases in the following format sundar: local_user. , then you must launch the command "newaliases"
I modified /etc/aliases with text editor(would it make any difference) and added sundar: sundar
Now I am able to send and receive in the local(snoopy) machine. But if I go to my Solaris(FQNM:charlie.esaravana.com; also my DNS for domain esaravana.com) I get the same error ######################################################## cliebt side message Response: 501 5.1.8

Hello,
I finally managed to configure my mail server at home on my gateway with sendmail/qpopper. I am able to receive my mail from default root(root@snoopy) account to any of my other local accounts(e.g Sundar@eSaravana.com). But when I try to send mail from any of my local accounts(Sundar@eSaravana.com) to itself(Sundar@eSaravana.com) -- I have just created only one account -- I get following error message
