I was looking through suse's support database and came across this little "how-to". Is this all I need to do to upgrade my kernel to 2.4.2? It can't be this simple:

Request: You would like to update your kernel using one of the RPM packages we offer on our FTP server.
Procedure: Download the package to your hard disk (e.g. the pentium optimized kernel k_deflt.rpm)
Save your old kernel and if necessary also your old initrd. cp /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old cp /boot/initrd /boot/initrd.old Install the new package by issuing the following command: rpm -Uhv k_deflt.rpm Create a new initial ramdisk, which holds drivers used for accessing your root file system (e.g. if it resides on a SCSI disk). SNIP Essentially I followed the above instructions with 2 exceptions. if you go to ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.1/kernel you will find a choice of kernels. I used the i386 kernel for my Athlon system rather than k_dflt. Also download modutils-2.4.2-14.i386.rpm from the same directory. Follow the instructions and at the same time as you rpm -Uvh the kernel put in the modutils. Worked fine for me. I know that purists would recommend installing everything from source but at the moment these upgrades work for me. When I have sufficient time then I'll have a go but until then I'll take the easy route. Regards Stu
