Hi again Jerry:
I find this message from one of the real player developers:
You either didn't chmod it, "chmod 777 rp7...bin" or you downloaded the wrong version for your CPU.
Well, I did the "chmod 777 rp8...bin" thing. Here is the results I get, whether I install as normal user or as root:
jerry@linux:~ > ls -l r* -rw-r--r-- 1 jerry jerry 6542930 Apr 6 18:52 rp7.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.rpm -rwxrwxrwx 1 jerry jerry 5940459 Apr 6 18:22 rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.bin -rw-r--r-- 1 jerry jerry 4978567 Apr 7 13:46 rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.rpm jerry@linux:~ > ./rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.bin Segmentation fault jerry@linux:~ > su - Password: linux:~ # cd /home/jerry/ linux:/home/jerry # ls r* rp7.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.rpm rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.bin rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.rpm linux:/home/jerry # ls -l r* -rw-r--r-- 1 jerry jerry 6542930 Apr 6 18:52 rp7.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.rpm -rwxrwxrwx 1 jerry jerry 5940459 Apr 6 18:22 rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.bin -rw-r--r-- 1 jerry jerry 4978567 Apr 7 13:46 rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.rpm linux:/home/jerry # ./rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs1.bin Error: Can't open display: linux:/home/jerry #
You see, when I try to install as normal user I get a Seg fault, when I try to install as root, I get "Error: Can't open display". I don't understand what is going on. I never had this problem with SuSE 6.4, and none of my hardware is different. Humm.....?
Actually, you are not installing. You don't 'run' an rpm file, you use rpm or an rpm tool. I open a term and enter 'sux -' , the the root password when asked. Then, from the terminal as root I issue the command 'kpackage'. When it comes up I unload the old realplayer and then use the 'file'menu option to open the new one. Then I click on the 'install button' . jlk
