Rather than relying on my two remaining functional neurons it would be better to consult the kernel howto.... but as to your questions: On Wednesday 04 April 2001 17:46, Greg Lentz wrote:
Thanks for the response. I have several follow-up questions:

Read the kernel howto. Essentially the steps are: 1) If you don't have your kernel source tree then install it. 2) as root, at a console, "make menuconfig" and in the Sound section select Alsa and your SB 16/AWE or use the OSS/free section...
I did not see ALSA listed as an option anywhere, so I used the OSS/Free section.
ALSA selections are just above the OSS/Free section, but OSS ok if it works.
3) make dep 3) make clear
When I type "make clear" I get the response "No rule to make target 'clear'. Stop."
You may have only some modules installed and not the entire tree. Check the various subdirectories under /usr/src/linux and see if you actually have code residing there. If not, pull the tree off your CD (for the kernel version you are running.). What out. I've noticed that SuSE will install the 2.2.18 kernel but the 2.4.0 tree. sheessh.
4) make bzImage
oops! forgot: make modules make modules_install (A mind is a terrible thing to lose)
5) cp bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz.yourinitials
At this point, I have to stop, since for some reason "make bzImage" doesn't leave a file called bzImage anywhere that I can see.
I apologize if I'm asking totally stupid questions, but I am a Windows refugee. I'm trying to change...
So am I. I program professionally using WinXX all day and I get tired of the crashing (or, on my Win2K - phantom rebooting, etc.) I switched to dual booting Win95 and SuSE in 1997 and erased Win95 from my system 18 months ago. Never looked back, and never missed it. Save a ton of cash. Haven't had a crash since Sept of 1997, and that one was caused by my bad C code, as I played with C to learn it. Like I said, check out the kernel howto at: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html or look in the SuSE manual. JLK
