Hi - y'all are ? I have noticed that in the changes file (/usr/src/linux/Documentation/changes), there are minimal requirements for upgrading to the 2.4.x - series kernels. Some of the stated files , are available - for SuSE70 - in the update directory at the ftp site. Others - like ' e2fsprogs , util-linux , Gnu C-2.91.66' , are not in the SuSE70 distro - tree - but are in the SuSE71 distro tree . With the senerio that one would like to keep with SuSE70 at this time, there is no streight forward method to ubdate the requirements stated in the changes file. Maybe if required files were put in the ftp.suse.com/bin/updates/70 , along with the updated kernel , that would be a bit more elegant update path for SuSE users. I was especially worried by comments on using the Gnu C-2.91.66 - or egcs 1.1.2 (gcc 2.91.66) . '' The recommended compiler for the kernel is egcs 1.1.2 (gcc 2.91.66), and it should be used when you need absolute stability. You may use gcc 2.95.2 instead if you wish, although it may cause problems. '' Hmm - what to do here ? - : - \ Major Logistics Problem - managing the system , and still trying to stay conformed to SuSE distro - dicipline ! Here's what I did so far - Downloaded all updates , and bug-fixed files from ftp.suse.com/pub/update/70 - that had 2001 dates - these were put there after the SuSE-Linux70 Professional official release date. (My CD's contained pre-patched - files (2000 dates) - good job suse. So I just look for updates - and bug-fixes that are 2001+ , and I absolutely need for my set-up . Got a 2.4.2-4GB kernel from ftp/suse/bin/updates/71/kernel - directory Got the updated modutils Had to go to ftp.suse.com/pub/updates/71 - to get ppp.rpm and I got lucky - it worked to get 'dial-out' back to functioning . then I again looked at the changes file /usr/src/linux/Documentation/changes , NOW I start thinking that I am going to be asking for trouble if I try and use any updated , required files that I can only obtain from 71 - when I just want to Trying to get my KAWAI X150-D synth to record MIDI - with ymfpci sound-card. Had to upgrade to 2.4.x series kernel - to make available newest ALSA's that are fixing this problem as we speak.
< namely - 2001-03-20 The 0.9.0beta3 packages were released for public.
< note from , alsa-developers-mail-list - that work in progress.
