Some additional info from dmesg shows the cdrom working for KDE1 Kscd ( the last few lines) but failing for Grip (the first part)
From dmesg: ATAPI device hdd: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05) Illegal mode for this track or incompatible medium -- (asc=0x64, ascq=0x00) reiserfs_read_super: unable to read superblock on dev 16:40 hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hdd: command error: error=0x54 end_request: I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector 64
This is the end of the failed Grip attempt. Here is a successful Kscd<1> attempt at playing a musical CD: ATAPI device hdd: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05) Illegal mode for this track or incompatible medium -- (asc=0x64, ascq=0x00) isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=16:40, iso_blknum=16, block=32 VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,64) [MS-DOS FS Rel. 12,FAT 0,check=n,conv=b,uid=0,gid=0,umask=022,bmap] [me=0x0,cs=0,#f=0,fs=0,fl=0,ds=0,de=0,data=0,se=0,ts=0,ls=0,rc=0,fc=4294967295] Transaction block size = 512 VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 16:40. In fact, every cdplay I have installed works EXCEPT Grip and Kscd<2>. Oh, I also read on page 405 that my CDROM, cua31a is no longer auto probed by the kernel and I must add a kernel parameter in LILO. This clearly doesn't make sense because except for Grip and Kscd<1> my CDROM reads both MSDOS and iso9660 Joliet CDs. Very confusing. And just when I thought I was begining to understand the ins and outs of Linux. JLK On Saturday 10 March 2001 09:17, you wrote:

The same Grip rpm ran fine under 7.0.
What setting do I have to change under 7.1 that was set automatically under 7.0? (These nagging little nit pickers can take the bloom off any rose) JLK
