If you made cloneconfig or "oldconfig" from a 2.2.X kernel and tried to use that for a 2.4.X kernel it will not work very well or so I am told. They are very different in a great many ways. What I would do is install the SuSE 2.4 kernel and once that is up then make cloneconfig off that running kernel. It should work out better.
